Recently, Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz posted on X—where he should have already cancelled his account in favor of Bluesky—“People like efficiency but they are not stupid and they know you don’t just cancel a bunch of cancer research or lay off a bunch of veterans and call that savings.”
I understand what you're saying, and I agree. But what do we do now? What do we do? We have never been here before, and most of us simply don't know what actions to take.
We have to focus locally. In Democratic districts that means reinforcing the values we cherish. In Republican districts, it means demonstrating that government provides services they desperately need that the private sector will not--disaster relief, school lunches, health insurance for people without a lot of money. I wrote some pieces on just how to do that right after the election. Stop all the fund raising emails and texts moaning about Trump. They failed before and will continue to fail. We've got to show ordinary people why our approach will make their lives better, or at least stop them from getting worse. And, I've got to say this, enough with the pronouns. That, as much as anything else, cost Democrats the election.
